A marsupial mammal of the family Pectiniidae. It lives in the forests of southwestern Australia. It licks up nectar and pollen with its long tongue, which extends about 2.5 cm (about 1/3 of its body length) from the tip of its mouth. Nectar-eating is an extremely unique diet for mammals, and is unknown except in some bats. It also eats small insects. Body length 7-8.5 cm, tail length 8.8-10 cm, weight 10-20 g. It looks similar to an insectivorous shrew, with a long, pointed snout to accommodate its long tongue. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
