A state in the far northwest of India. It has an area of 56,000 km2 and a population of 5.17 million (1991). The state capital is Shimla. The main language is Western Pahari. The state's name means "state of snowy mountains." From the north, three mountain ranges of different altitudes run from northwest to southeast, the Greater Himalaya, the Lesser Himalaya, and the Shiwalik, between which rivers such as the Chenab and the Sutlej create narrow river valley plains. The river valleys produce rice, corn, and fruits (peaches, apples, etc.). The mountain slopes above the river valleys are covered with lush forests of pine, Himalayan cedar, and other trees, and forestry is the state's largest industry.
