Dye toning

...Dyeing was considered from the early days of film, and at first each frame was dyed by hand, but around 1896 the stencil process was invented in England and France, and was widely used in various countries until around 1910, and in Japan it was released as a "high-color film." The toning process involves plating or replacing the particles of the positive silver image with other metals or compounds, and later, the dye toning process was discovered, which allows for a richer range of colors. Many of G. Méliès' trick films were colored, and in the original print of ES Porter's The Great Train Robbery (1903), said to be the first Western, the robber's gun shot at the end of the film was colored red. ...
