Pretoria - Pretoria (English spelling)

The administrative capital of South Africa. It is located at an altitude of 1,400 meters in the center of Gauteng Province (formerly Transvaal Province). It has a population of 1,104,479 (1996), 741,651 (2011 census). It is about 60 km northeast of Johannesburg, the country's largest city, and is connected to the legislative capital, Cape Town, by a railway of about 1,600 km. It was founded in 1835 by the Boers (of Dutch descent) during the Great Trek, and was named after their leader, Andries Wilhelmus Jacobus Pretorius (1799-1853). It became the capital of the Transvaal Republic in 1860, but was occupied by the British during the Second Boer War (1899-1902). When the Union of South Africa was established in 1910 (becoming a republic in 1961), the federal government was established in the city. Since the establishment of the Iron and Steel Corporation of South Africa (ISCOR) in 1928, the number of steel and related factories has increased, and the area is now at the northern end of the industrial belt centered on Johannesburg.

The city is located in a basin surrounded by mountains, and the Abbeys River flows through the southeast of the city. The center of the city is Church Square, where there is a statue of former Transvaal President Kruger, and historical buildings such as the Volksraad Building, the South African Reserve Bank, and the General Post Office are lined up around the square. As it is the administrative center, there are many government offices, especially the Union Buildings on Mainkiskop Hill, a large Greek-style building designed by Sir H. Beyer between 1910 and 1913, which currently houses the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Other notable buildings include the University of Pretoria, the University of South Africa, the Transvaal Museum, and Burgers Park. Six kilometers south of the city, on a hill, is the Voortrekkers Monument, a large stone structure commemorating the Great Trek. Jan Smuts International Airport, shared with Johannesburg, is 54 kilometers south.

南アフリカ共和国の行政上の首都。ハウテン州（旧トランスバール州）中央部の標高1400メートルの高地に位置する。人口110万4479（1996）、74万1651（2011センサス）。同国最大の都市ヨハネスバーグの北東約60キロメートルにあり、立法上の首都ケープ・タウンとは約1600キロメートルの鉄道で結ばれる。1835年に、ブーア人（オランダ系）の内陸大移動（グレート・トレック）によって建設され、その指導者プレトリウスAndries Wilhelmus Jacobus Pretorius（1799―1853）にちなんで命名された。1860年トランスバール共和国の首都となったが、第二次ブーア戦争（1899～1902）の際にはイギリス軍に占領された。1910年の南アフリカ連邦発足（1961年共和国となる）とともに連邦の行政府が置かれた。28年南アフリカ鉄鋼公社（ISCOR）が設立されてからは、鉄鋼およびその関連工場が増加し、ヨハネスバーグを中心とする工業地帯の北端となっている。

　市街は周囲を山に囲まれた盆地にあり、市の南東部をアビース川が流れる。市の中心はチャーチ・スクエア（広場）で、トランスバール共和国元大統領クリューガーの立像があり、広場の周囲にはフォルクスラート・ビル、南アフリカ準備銀行、中央郵便局などの歴史的建物が並んでいる。また行政の中心地であるため官庁が多く、とくにメインキスコップ（丘）にそびえるユニオン・ビルは、1910～13年にH・ベイヤー卿(きょう)が設計したギリシア風大建築で、現在は大蔵省と外務省になっている。ほかにプレトリア大学、南アフリカ大学、トランスバール博物館、バーガーズ公園などがある。また市の南方6キロメートルの丘の上には、グレート・トレックの記念碑である大石造建築のフォール・トレッカーズ・モニュメントがある。南方54キロメートルにヨハネスバーグと共同のヤン・スマッツ国際空港がある。
