Reliques of Ancient English Poetry

...That is to say, the term originally meant "songs sung at dances," but eventually came to refer to "folk songs" in general, and since many English folk songs were narrative, it came to mean "narrative poetry" in general. The collection of old folk songs that began in the late 18th century had a major influence, and the term came to refer to poems with strong narrative elements from Germany, Northern Europe, and other Germanic countries, based on the collection of Reliques of ancient English poetry (1765) edited by Thomas Percy (1729-1811). In narrative poetry, narrative content is combined with dramatic means of expression (such as rapid depiction of events and frequent use of monologue and dialogue), and the singer's subjective feelings are expressed through refrains.
