…It is said that the first centaurs were born from the mating of Ixion, the first kinslayer, and Nephele, the cloud sent by Zeus in the likeness of his wife Hera, or from the mating of their sons, the Centaurs, with mares. They were a savage and lustful race, living on Mount Pelion in Thessaly, but when they were invited to the wedding of Peirithoos, the king of the neighboring Lapithai tribe, several drunken centaurs tried to rape the bride and other Lapithai women, resulting in a battle between the two tribes, and the defeated Centaurs fled to the Peloponnese. Later, when the hero Hercules was passing through Elis on his way to a boar hunt on Mount Erymanthus, a battle broke out with the Centaurs over a trivial matter, and many of the Centaurs lost their lives. …

From this point on, there are many stories of his adventures, such as his expedition to the land of the Amazon women (Hippolytus was the son of the Amazon queen), his ally with the Lapithai in fighting the half-man, half-horse centaurs, and his descent into the underworld together with his best friend Peirithoos to kidnap Persephone, the queen of the underworld. …the singular is Lapithēs. When their king, Ixion's son Peirithous, married Hippodameia, he invited his half-brother, the Centaurs of Mount Pelion, to the feast. The drunken Centaurs tried to plunder the bride and the Lapithai women, and a great brawl broke out. The Lapithai, aided by Theseus, the Athenian prince and friend of Peirithous, who had also been invited to the feast, defeated the Centaurs after a fierce battle.
