Welfen

...Such a movement was lurking in the background of the sharp rebellion of the Saxon nobles against the Salier dynasty emperors during the Investiture Controversy (1073-75). Meanwhile, the title of Grand Duke of Saxony passed from the House of Billung to the House of Supplingenburg (Lothair III as king) and then to the House of Welfen, a great noble family from southern Germany. Henry the Lion of this family then exerted grand ducal authority over virtually the entire former tribal territory, and by bringing the Slavic principalities to the northeast under his control, he established an almost kingly position in the north. ...

From the Staufen Dynasty

...His two sons, Frederick II the One-Eyed, Grand Duke of Swabia (reigned 1105-47) and Conrad the One-Eyed, Grand Duke of Franconia (later King), were the pillars of Henry V's life and supported southwestern Germany. After the king died childless, he inherited the Salier lands and claimed the right to the German throne. In the 1125 election, Frederick the One-Eyed was defeated by Lothar the One-Eyed, Grand Duke of Saxony (who became King III), but after the king's death (1137), Conrad was elected King of Germany, beating out the previous king's son-in-law, Henry the Proud, of the Welfen family (?-1139). Of the Stauven kings, Frederick I (Barbarossa, Barbarossa) left the greatest mark.
