The legend of Ataka

...After that, Benkei played an active role as Yoshitsune's faithful subordinate. Among his most notable stories are that when Yoshitsune fled to the western provinces, he prayed to calm the vengeful spirits of the Taira clan that appeared on the sea (Funabenkei Legend), when Yoshitsune fled to the northern provinces, he used his wits to help Yoshitsune safely capture them at ferries and checkpoints (Ataka Barrier is particularly prominent in the Ataka Legend), and in the Battle of Kinugawa, he died standing up despite being riddled with enemy arrows (Stuck Legend).

Other than the "Gikeiki," there are also the "Musashibo Benkei Illustrated Scroll," "The Tale of Benkei," and the Otogi-zoshi stories "Self-Splitting Benkei" and "Benkei on the Bridge," which also state that Benkei's father was the Kumano betto and that his birthplace was in Kumano.
