...Major films that attempted to follow the success of The Sound of Music, such as Warner Bros./Seven Arts' Camelot (1967), 20th Century Fox's The Wonderful Adventures of Doctor Dolittle (1967), Columbia's Funny Girl (1968), MGM's Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1969), and Paramount's The Painter's Wagon (1969), all failed and caused damage to their respective companies. And in a barren time when musical films were said to survive only on television screens, Broadway director and choreographer Bob Fosse (1927-87) made a film version of Cabaret (1972) starring Judy Garland and Vincente Minnelli's daughter Liza Minnelli (1946- ), and it was praised as a sign of the musical film's revival as a work of the 1970s with a serious subject and a serious depiction. However, although there were popular works such as Fosse's autobiographical All That Jazz (1979) and Milos Forman's Hair (1979), musical films as entertainment that "gives dreams" are steadily declining as they were originally intended.
