International Council for Science. An international academic organization to which the academies of science from around the world belong. The Science Council of Japan is a member representing Japan. Its main objective is to promote cooperation among international academic societies, particularly in the field of natural sciences, and to promote cooperation in international scientific activities. Founded in 1931. In 1998, the name was changed from the previous International Council of Scientific Unions, but the abbreviation ICSU remains the same. Its headquarters are in Paris.
