1850‐1923 Portuguese poet. After graduating from the University of Coimbra, he chose to become a civil servant, later becoming a member of parliament and then minister to Bern, but in his later years he left public service due to illness. He showed a talent for poetry from an early age, and his poetry collections The Death of Don Juan (1874) and Old Father Eterno (1885) made him one of Portugal's greatest poets and one of the leading poets of his time. The influence of the religious education he received as a child is evident in his poetry, and Old Father Eterno is a sharp satire of the clergy.
