Portuguese poet. After graduating from the University of Coimbra, he chose to become a civil servant, later becoming a member of parliament and then minister to Bern, but in his later years he left public service due to illness. He showed a talent for poetry from an early age, and his poetry collections The Death of Don Juan (1874) and Old Father Eterno (1885) made him one of Portugal's greatest poets and one of the leading poets of his time. The influence of the religious education he received as a child is evident in his poetry, and Old Father Eterno is a sharp satire of the clergy.

ポルトガルの詩人。コインブラ大学卒業後官吏の道をえらんだ後に代議士，ベルン駐在公使となるが，晩年は病気のため公職を去る。少年の頃から詩才を示していた彼は，詩集《ドン･フアンの死》(1874)，《老いたるエテルノ神父》(1885)によってポルトガル最大の詩人の一人，当代一流の詩人と言われた。彼の詩には幼いときに受けた宗教教育の影響が陰に陽に認められ，《老いたるエテルノ神父》には聖職者に対する鋭い風刺がこめられている。
