The Lord of the Mountains

A calendar scholar and Japanese mathematics scholar in the mid-Edo period. He was commonly known as Yazaemon and his pen name was Kimiju. He also had the pen names Renkaiken and Chouu. In 1724 (Kyoho 9), at the age of 21, he was called to the Matsumae Shuba-gumi Okamoto, and in 1725 (Kyoho 18), he was ordered to be the head accountant, and in 1739 (Genbun 4), he was ordered to take charge of small construction works. In 1748 (Kyoen 1), he became an assistant to Shibukawa Noriyoshi and Nishikawa Masayasu for the calendar revision, traveling between Kyoto and Edo and participating in the calendar revision project for the Horeki-Kojutsu calendar (55). He always worked as an assistant to both astronomy professors, and in 1750 (Meiwa 1), he became the astronomy professor. He studied Japanese mathematics under Nakane Genkei, Kurushima Gita, and Matsunaga Ryosuke, and is known for his research on repeating decimals and rakujutsu, and has written many books on the subject. As the third disciple of the Seki school, he wrote many books on mathematics, including the introductory book on mathematics education in the Seki school, "Sekiryu Sanpo Sojutsu" (45 volumes). Naoen Ajima was one of his disciples. He was buried at Daisenji Temple in Yanaka.

江戸時代中期の暦学者,和算家。通称は弥左衛門,字は君樹。連貝軒,聴雨と号した。享保9 (1724) 年,21歳のときに松前主馬組御徒に召され,同 18年支配勘定,元文4 (39) 年小普請入を命じられた。寛延1 (48) 年に渋川則休,西川正休の補暦之御用手伝となり,京都および江戸を往復して,宝暦甲戌暦の修暦事業 (55) に参加,常にこの両天文方の補佐として働き,明和1 (64) 年に天文方になった。中根元圭,久留島義太,松永良弼に師事して和算を学び,循環小数,角術などの研究で知られ,それに関する著書が多い。また,関流宗統3伝として,関流の数学教育の入門書『関流算法草術』 (45巻) のほか多数の数学書を書いた。安島直円は彼の門弟の一人である。谷中大泉寺に葬られた。
