An old town in Mima County in northern Tokushima Prefecture. It occupies the north bank of the Yoshino River, on the southern slope of the Sanuki Mountains, and the main settlement is on an alluvial fan at the foot of the mountains. Field crops are the mainstay of the town, but livestock and sericulture are also practiced. Japanese umbrellas were once a specialty of the town, and Dannotsukaana (historic site), a cave-in burial mound, is located here. In March 2005, it merged with Wakimachi, Anabukimachi, and Kiyadairamura in Mima County to become a city, Mima City. 46.44 km2 . 9,334 people (2003). 徳島県北部,美馬郡の旧町。吉野川の北岸,讃岐(さぬき)山脈の南斜面を占め,主集落は山麓の扇状地にある。畑作が主で,畜産,養蚕も行う。かつては和傘(わがさ)を特産。横穴式古墳の段ノ塚穴(史跡)がある。2005年3月美馬郡脇町,穴吹町,木屋平村と合併し市制,美馬市となる。46.44km2。9334人(2003)。
