Egyo

Japanese:
Egyo
Year of birth: Year of birth and death unknown. A monk and poet of the Heian period. Some say it is pronounced "Ekei". His origins are unclear, but he was active as a poet in the latter half of the 10th century. He once lived in Kokubunji in Harima and was called "Harima lecturer". His family anthology "Ekeishu" is interesting because it shows his wide-ranging interactions with middle-class poets such as Taira no Kanemori and Kiyohara no Motosuke. He composed a collection of 100 poems in response to the work of Sone Yoshitada, and was particularly close to Anpo, and is known for his poem "Yae mugura shigeru yado no sabishiki ni hito koso o mo ine aki wa ki ni ke ri" (The loneliness of the inn where the double-petaled mugura grows, but no one is seen in autumn, coming), which describes the ruins of Kawara-in, where Anpo lived. On the other hand, he also composed many works commissioned by upper-class aristocrats such as Kazan-in and Minamoto no Takaaki, showing his side as a professional poet. His works are included in imperial anthologies such as "Shuishū" and subsequent ones.
