〘noun〙① A letter recommending someone seeking a position or official rank to an appropriate individual or institution. Suikyoujo. ※Ritsu (718) Shiki- sei (official regulations) : "If the candidate is examined and given an examination, he _{or she} will not be _selected for the position and _{_{will be recommended}} in _writing . _Therefore , the candidate _{will not} _{be considered for} the position. The _number of applicants will be reduced _accordingly ."② A document attached to legal proceedings during the Kamakura and Muromachi periods. (i) A letter submitted by the head of the household, honjo, or jito when a person under the control of a jito, gokenin, or other retainer, or other person under the control of another person, filed a lawsuit in his or her own name. If this was not present, the appeal would not be accepted as a direct appeal. ※Goseibai Shikimoku (1232), Article 6: "If the _petition _{is not} filed in _both places _, it will be _a _case of filing a lawsuit. _For the sake of the nobility of the provinces and the Buddhist shrines, _a _petition can be filed in _both places, _but if the _petition _{is not filed} , it is considered to _be _unreasonable ." (b) This is also a document to notify the court that a deputy governor will be appointed from among the regular members to represent the deputy in the lawsuit. This was sometimes made into a separate document, and sometimes this was noted in the petition sent in response to a petition from the court. ※Toga Document - Chinzei Shikijo, June 2, 1299 (Eijin 7), "At the time _of filing the _petition , since Koreshige was acting on _{the other} side, it is _{recorded that} Koremune can file _{a petition} _{and it} is _acceptable ."

〘名〙① 所職や官位をのぞむ者を適当な個人や機関に推薦する書状。吹挙状(すいきょじょう)。※律（718）職制「若考校課試。而不_レ以_レ実。及選_レ官乖_二於挙状_一。以_レ故不_レ称_レ職者。減_二一等_一」② 鎌倉・室町時代、訴訟手続の際に添付された文書。(イ) 地頭御家人以下の郎党そのほかの他人の支配に属している者が、自分の名義で訴訟するときに、主家、本所、地頭などが添えて提出した書状。これがない場合は直訴として受けつけられなかった。※御成敗式目（1232）六条「不_レ帯_二本所挙状_一致_二越訴_一事、諸国庄公并神社仏事以_二本所挙状_一可_レ経_二訴訟_一之処、不_レ帯_二其状_一者既背_二道理_一歟」(ロ) 同じく正員から代官を立てて訴訟を代理させる旨を裁判所に通知する文書。これには独立にひとつの文書を作ることも、裁判所からの問状(といじょう)に対して出す請文のなかでその旨を記すこともあった。※都甲文書‐永仁七年（1299）六月二日・鎮西下知状「番_二訴陳_一之刻、惟重他行之間、惟宗帯_二挙状_一、可_二明申_一之由載_レ之」
