...(1) Methods for preventing overflowing: stacking sumo bales on the top of the levee (Fig. a), driving piles into the top of the levee and placing a dam on it, laying straw mats on the back slope of the levee to prevent overflowing and scouring (Fig. b), etc. (2) Methods for preventing scouring: attaching weighted sumo bales to trees and placing them on the scouring area (Fig. c), placing cows in the scouring area with frames, covering the scouring area with gabions (cylindrical baskets woven with a tortoiseshell pattern and filled with stones) (Fig. d), dumping large stones or stone bales into the scouring area, and stacking sumo bales on the back slope to compensate for the reduction in the levee cross section caused by scouring (Fig. e). (3) Construction methods for preventing water leakage These include the step-deck method (Fig. f), which uses water pressure to prevent the expansion of the leakage opening in the ground inside the levee and drains the water so that the inside of the levee does not become filled with water, the Tsukinawa method, which is similar to the step-deck method and is used to prevent water leakage from the back slope, the packed-in sandbag method, which packs a sandbag over the leakage opening on the river surface, and the straw-laying method, which covers the leakage surface on the river surface with straw (also used to prevent scouring).
