Intermodal transport - Renrakuunyu

Japanese:
Intermodal transport - Renrakuunyu
In a broad sense, it refers to the direct transportation of passengers and freight between different transportation companies, but in a narrow sense, it refers to the transportation between JR (formerly JNR) and other railways, automobiles, passenger ships, etc. It first began in 1882 when Taihu Kisen opened a route on Lake Biwa, connecting the uncompleted Nagahama-Otsu section of the JNR Tokaido Line. Before World War II, it provided through transportation not only with the mainland, but also with railways in Korea and China, and international through transportation with railways in European countries via the Trans-Siberian Railway. Through transportation does not only refer to the aspect of transportation contracts, such as the sale of through tickets, but can also refer to the act of transportation itself, such as through the direct use of vehicles, and the shared use of through stations is also one form of through transportation.
