Mihrab (English spelling) miḥrāb; mehrāb

A type of niche in the innermost wall of a mosque. It indicates the qibla (the direction of Mecca), is framed by an arch, and is often beautifully decorated with marble, stucco, tiles, mosaics, etc. It is said that the first was installed in a mosque in Medina in 694, and is presumed to have been established in the early Islamic period. There are various theories about its origin, but the most widely accepted one is that it can be found in the apse, the innermost part of a Christian church.

モスクにおいて，礼拝室の最奥の壁に設けられた一種のニッチ (壁龕) 。キブラ (メッカの方向) を示すもので，アーチによって縁どられ，大理石，スタッコ (化粧漆喰) ，タイル・モザイクなどによって，美しい装飾が施されるものが多い。 694年メディナのモスクに設けられたのが最初といわれ，イスラム初期に成立したと推定される。起源に関して諸説があるが，キリスト教教会堂の最奥のアプスにそれを求める説が有力。
