A city found mainly in northern France, which was formed by residents as a community of sworn citizens called a "commune", was granted a "commune deed" by the lord or king and enjoyed various privileges. It is also run by a body of city magistrates elected by the residents. It is a type of medieval city in France, along with consulat cities and francies. Consulat cities are found in the south of the country and are run by a body of city magistrates (consulas, characterized by the fact that not only citizens but also clergy and lords participate), and are granted a "consumer deed" and enjoy various privileges.
