On March 4, 1806 (Bunka 3), a large fire broke out in Kurumacho (also called Ushimachi, currently Minato Ward) in Shiba, Edo, and burned down part of Daimyo-koji, almost the entire areas of Kyobashi and Nihonbashi, and most of Kanda and Asakusa. It is also called the Kurumamachi Fire or Ushimachi Fire. Over 1,000 people were killed, and Zojoji Temple, Shiba Shinmeisha Shrine, and Higashi Honganji Temple were also damaged. The shogunate housed the victims in relief huts, provided relief funds, and took measures such as cracking down on high prices after the fire.
