A doctor in the early Edo period. Born in Kyoto. Also written as Nagoya Gen'i. His pen name was Eppo or Fujun, and he was known by the names Gishun'an, Tansui-shi, and Tokei. He studied Confucianism under Ushu Sojun, and was skilled in the Book of Changes and divination, but later decided to become a doctor. He read and resonated with "Treatise on Febrile Diseases" by Yu Jiayan (1585-1664) of the Ming Dynasty in China, and advocated the restoration of medicine. He rejected the medical theories of the later school, which were popular at the time, and the medical methods of Li and Zhu, and introduced "Treatise on Febrile Diseases" by Zhang Zhongjing of the Later Han Dynasty, and argued for a return to its empirical spirit. For this reason, he is considered the founder of the ancient school of medicine. He was prone to many illnesses and was always bedridden in his later years, but he treated many patients and wrote many medical books. Some of his well-known works include "Nan Jing Commentary," "Commentary on the Jinki," "Questions on Medical Treatment," "Dan Shui Zi," and "Food Materia Medica."
