Leonor Michaelis

1875‐1949
German-born physiological chemist. After graduating from the University of Berlin, he studied early embryology under O. Hertwig and immunology under P. Ehrlich. He eventually switched to basic biophysical chemistry, achieving many accomplishments including the theory and measurement of hydrogen ion concentration and buffer solutions in enzyme reactions. He is particularly famous for his theory of the substrate-enzyme complex in enzyme reactions (the Michaelis-Menten equation). He came to Japan in 1922 and was appointed professor of biochemistry at the Nagoya Medical College. In 1926, at the invitation of J. Loeb, he traveled to the United States, where he worked as a lecturer at Johns Hopkins University before conducting research at the Rockefeller Institute (1929-40).

ドイツ生れの生理化学者。ベルリン大学を卒業後，O.ヘルトウィヒのもとで初期発生学，P.エールリヒのもとで免疫学を研究。やがて基礎的な生物物理化学に転じ，酵素反応の水素イオン濃度と緩衝液の理論，測定など多くの業績をあげた。なかでも酵素反応の基質酵素複合体の理論(ミハエリス=メンテンの式)はとくに名高い。1922年来日し，名古屋の医学専門学校の生化学教授に赴任。26年J.ロイブの招きでアメリカに渡り，ジョンズ･ホプキンズ大学講師を経て，ロックフェラー研究所で研究した(1929‐40)。
