The giant termite lives in rotten wood at Cape Ashizuri, Cape Sata, and from Yakushima to Tokunoshima. The Korean termite (south of Okinawa), the Katan termite (south of the southern coast of Honshu), the Satsuma termite (south of Cape Ashizuri), and the Nakajima termite (south of Shikoku and the southern coast of Kyushu) build nests in dead branches and trunks of trees such as Tabu, Shii, and Oak, causing branch breakage and cavities. The Formosan termite is found south of Okinawa and creates fungal chambers in the soil.
