1224 koro-82 Emperor of the Byzantine Empire. Reigned 1259-82. A military emperor with diplomatic skills. He served as regent for Pope John IV of Nicaea (aged 8) in 1258, and then became co-emperor. After recapturing Constantinople from the Latin Empire in 1261, he deposed the infant emperor and ascended the throne himself, founding the Palaiologos dynasty (1259-1453). He opposed the anti-Byzantine policies of King Charles of Sicily (house of Angevin) once by signing the Declaration of Church Unity (Second Council of Lyon, 1274), and again by forming an alliance with Pedro III of Aragon (Sicilian Vespers).
