A type of men's shawl used mainly in northern Mexico. Woven with cotton for the weft and wool for the warp, it has a multicolored horizontal stripe pattern and tassels on both ends. It is used as cold weather clothing for people working outdoors, but is also used as decoration by mariachi musicians. Similar rectangular woven fabrics with collar holes are called horongos, ponchos, gabans, etc., and are more common and widely used than sarapes.
