A general term for birds of the crane family. A large bird with a long neck and legs, similar to a heron. It lives in marshes and plains, and eats insects, frogs, and grains. It is monogamous. It builds cone-shaped nests of dried grass and twigs in reed beds and generally lays two eggs. There are 15 species worldwide. Seven species have been recorded in Japan. They used to be distributed throughout the country, but in recent years they are rare, with about 600 red-crowned cranes near Kushiro, Hokkaido, about 8,000 hooded cranes in Izumi City, Kagoshima Prefecture, and about 2,000 white-naped cranes (other birds that occasionally migrate include Siberian cranes, common cranes, and sandhill cranes). →Crowned cranes / Flamingos
