...In the early modern period, this was a person or family who was the descendant of a noble family and served the Edo Shogunate and was responsible for its ceremonies and rites (especially those related to the Imperial Court). Its origin is said to be Osawa Motoie, who served as the recipient of the presentation box containing the imperial decree when Tokugawa Ieyasu was proclaimed Shogun in 1603 (Keicho 8).
