Minoji

Japanese:
Minoji
A road connecting Atsuta on the Tokaido and Tarui on the Nakasendo. It branches off from the Tokaido at Miyano-juku in Atsuta Ward, Nagoya City, and passes through Kiyosu, Inaba (Inazawa City), Hagiwara (Ichinomiya City), Okoshi (Bisai City), Sunomata (Gifu Prefecture), and Ogaki (Gifu Prefecture) before reaching Tarui on the Nakasendo. It is a side road of 14 ri 24 cho (57.5 km) long. There was a ferry from Miyano-juku to Kuwana on the Tokaido, but people and children who did not like to travel by sea, and large processions (such as alternate attendance, Ryukyu king's envoys, and Korean envoys) used the Mino-ji, which was flat and closer, and was therefore more crowded than the main road. It was also called the Auspicious Years Road, after Tokugawa Ieyasu's triumphant return and the unification of Japan, and was also called the Tokaido Mino-ji Route and the Nakasendo Owari Route. It was also written as Mino Kaido, and was also known by other names such as Omiji, Oki Kaido, and Suminomata Kaido. Along this road were rows of pine trees, mileposts, and a post station system, and even today the townscape of Tomita in Bisai City, Hagiwara, and Oki retain the atmosphere of a post station.
