Hereford is an agricultural city in the west of Hereford and Worcestershire, in the west of England, and was the capital of the former Herefordshire until 1974. It has a population of 50,000 (1991). It is located in the middle reaches of the River Wye, close to the border with Wales, and is the center of the surrounding agricultural region, trading in beef cattle (Hereford breed), as well as light industries such as food processing, brewing, leather, and furniture. It originated as a settlement established on the Welsh border by the Saxons who crossed the River Severn in the early 7th century. Later, Harold II built a castle, and in 1189 it became an autonomous city and prospered through the wool trade. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
