Hereford

Hereford is an agricultural city in the west of Hereford and Worcestershire, in the west of England, and was the capital of the former Herefordshire until 1974. It has a population of 50,000 (1991). It is located in the middle reaches of the River Wye, close to the border with Wales, and is the center of the surrounding agricultural region, trading in beef cattle (Hereford breed), as well as light industries such as food processing, brewing, leather, and furniture. It originated as a settlement established on the Welsh border by the Saxons who crossed the River Severn in the early 7th century. Later, Harold II built a castle, and in 1189 it became an autonomous city and prospered through the wool trade.

イギリス，イングランド西部，ヘリフォード･ウースター州西部にある農業都市で，1974年まで旧ヘリフォードシャーの州都であった。人口5万(1991)。ウェールズとの境界に近い，ワイ川中流に位置し，周辺農業地域の中心地として肉用牛(ヘリフォード種)の取引が行われるほか，食品加工，醸造，皮革，家具などの軽工業が発達する。7世紀初めにセバーン川を越えたサクソン族がウェールズ国境に建設した集落を起源とし，その後ハロルド2世が城を築き，1189年には自治都市となって羊毛交易で栄えた。
