One soup and three dishes - ichijusansai

Japanese: 一汁三菜 - いちじゅうさんさい

A simple meal from the past. One soup and one dish is the height of simplicity, one soup and three dishes is the norm, and one soup and five dishes is a little more luxurious. One soup and three dishes is served with one soup and three other dishes: pickled vegetables, hira (a stew), and a grilled dish. The grilled dish is served separately on a tray, and the tray is first placed in front of the main meal, and then the grilled dish is placed on top of the main meal.

昔の簡単な食事の形式。一汁一菜は簡素の極みであるが、一汁三菜は一般型、一汁五菜はこころもち豪華となる。一汁三菜は一つの汁とほかに三つの菜が出てくるが、それはなます、平(ひら)（煮物）、焼き物の三つである。焼き物は盆にのせて別に進め、いったん盆を膳(ぜん)の正面に置いてから、焼き物を膳の上にのせる。
