Hososhima

A port town in Hyuga City in northern Miyazaki Prefecture. Formerly Hososhima Town. Connected to Makishimayama to the north, Komenoyama to the south, and Hyuga city center to the west, it is a good natural harbor facing the Hyuga Nada Sea. Currently, with the construction of a new industrial port in the northwest, it has become a commercial and industrial port. The best harbor in the prefecture, it was used as a trade port for the Song and Ming dynasties, and for the sea routes of sankin-kotai (alternate attendance) for the Hyuga feudal domains. It also serves as an outer port for the industrial city of Nobeoka. Myokokuji Temple Garden has been designated a national place of scenic beauty. The Hososhima Port Museum opened in 1999 (Heisei 11).

宮崎県北部、日向市(ひゅうがし)に属す港町。旧細島町。北を牧島(まきしま)山、南を米(こめ)ノ山、西部は日向市街地と結ばれ、日向灘(なだ)に面する天然の良港。現在は北西部に新たに工業港が造成されたため、商工業港となっている。県内第一の良港で、宋(そう)・明(みん)貿易寄港地、日向諸藩の海路参勤交代に利用された。工業都市延岡(のべおか)の外港的役割も果たす。妙国寺(みょうこくじ)庭園は国の名勝に指定されている。1999年（平成11）細島みなと資料館が開館した。
