Haikai Senshu (Collection of Haikai Poems). Two volumes. Edited by Kikaku. Published in 1683 (Tenwa 3). The title comes from Kikaku's hokku (hokku), "Kogarashi yo yo ni ni gareru nashinashi kuri (chestnuts that are not picked up by the world)." The first volume contains over 220 hokku (hokku) for spring and summer, four volumes of kasen (traditional Japanese poems), and one volume of 25 verses. The second volume contains over 180 hokku (hokku) for autumn and winter, five volumes of kasen (traditional Japanese poems), etc. The authors include Basho, Kikaku, Ransetsu, Saimaru, Issho, Sugikaze, Sodo, Jishun, and other Edo Sho school students, as well as Shintoku, Chiharu, Akikaze, and Soin from Kyoto and Osaka. The haiku style is mostly composed of Chinese poetry and prose, such as "Remembering the old forest, / The wind blows through my beard, / Who is this child lamenting in autumn, Basho" and "I spend the years greedily sipping poetry, / How much of my debt for wine, / In winter, the sun sets on the lake, / Basho" and the tone is often difficult and incomplete. This style of reciting is called the "Kokkuri style" or "Tenna style", and it clearly shows the transitional haiku style that transcended Danrin haiku and led to the Basho style.
