A large river in Western Asia. It originates near the Kurdistan mountain range in eastern Turkey, flows west, turns south into Syria, then turns southeast through Iraq, merges with the Tigris, becomes the Shatt al-Arab, and empties into the Persian Gulf. Its total length is about 2,800 km, and its drainage area is about 579,300 ^km2 . The water volume is lowest in September and highest in May. The lower reaches, together with the Tigris basin, are called Mesopotamia, and are known as the birthplace of the world's oldest civilization. Since the Mesopotamian plain has almost no slope, the river course has changed many times since ancient times due to floods. Currently, water resource development plans are being implemented in Turkey, Syria, and Iraq.
