...Its distinctive feature was its attempt to raise production quotas (standard amounts) based on technological acquisition. On August 31, 1935, Aleksei Grigor'evich Stakhanov (1906-1977), a coal miner in the Donbass, used a pneumatic hammer to extract 102 tons of coal in one shift (14 times the quota). Using this as a model, the movement was launched at the end of 1935, at a time when the Soviet Union was in the midst of the Second Five-Year Plan, the development of socialist industry was on track, and the collectivization of agriculture, after many difficulties brought about by its aggressive methods, was finally on track to be achieved, and the country was about to enter a new period of construction for its domestic economy.
