A report of a particular matter from a lower rank to a higher rank or institution, or the document itself. This term was used frequently in the Edo period, and is often used to refer to reports submitted by townspeople or villages to feudal lords. Ledger-type documents are also called shojocho or shodatsucho. For example, the shogunate had regular or temporary market prices written down for important commodities such as gold, silver, and coins, as well as rice, soybeans, and oil, for the purpose of price control, and these were called shojo yakai (market prices). In addition, the machikata shojo and mura seishojocho (town and village records), which required townspeople and villagers to write down general information such as the number of households, number of people, land, and occupation, are typical examples of shojo (registers).
