British composer. Also known as Delius. Born in Bradford in the north of England to German parents, he showed early talent in piano and violin. He moved to various parts of Europe to help his father's company, and in 1884 he took a job on an orange plantation in Florida, but he devoted himself to music. From 1886 to 1888 he became an auditor at the Leipzig Conservatory, where he became friends with Grieg. He then lived in Paris, where he became friends with M. Ravel, Strindberg, Munch, and Gauguin, and in 1897 he settled in Grez-sur-Loing, outside of Paris. He lost his sight in his later years, but continued to compose with the dedicated help of E. Fenby, a musician from Yorkshire. His works, influenced by R. Wagner, Grieg, and modern French music, are characterized by their own lyricism and subtle sense of color, and he left behind many masterpieces in orchestral, chamber, choral, and opera works. Widely known are orchestral pieces such as In the Summer Garden (1908, revised in 1913), the Mass of Life for soloist, chorus and orchestra by Nietzsche (1904-1905), and the Cello Concerto (1921). → Beecham → Related topics Impressionism | Tudor | Russell Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
