Closed hunting area

Japanese:
Closed hunting area

Areas where hunting is suspended. A type of wildlife protection area established under the Law on the Protection and Management of Birds and Animals and the Rationalization of Hunting. Prefectural governors set these areas for periods of up to three years in order to promote the proliferation of game birds and animals in a certain area when the number of game birds and animals decreases. Each area is 1,500 hectares or more in size. The reason for the three-year period is that game birds and animals usually recover within two to three years if there are no significant changes to the topography and artificial capture is stopped. When the period expires, the closed hunting area is often opened to the public and made into a general hunting ground or a hunting area (paid hunting area), and the adjacent area is made into a closed hunting area, in a rotating system. Anyone who captures game birds and animals in a closed hunting area without special permission is subject to imprisonment of up to one year or a fine of up to one million yen.
