1840‐84 He was a chief who united the Nyamwezi people who lived in what is now central-western Tanzania in East Africa. As a boy, he was captured by the Ngoni people who had migrated north from South Africa, but he learned their military organization and expanded his power by strengthening the Nyamwezi people, who were divided into small groups led by chiefs and lacked political unity. Under his leadership, the Nyamwezi people were able to compete with Arab and Swahili merchants in the caravan trade connecting Central Africa with the Indian Ocean coast, and prospered after concluding a trade agreement with both in 1876.
