Mitsue [village] - Mitsue

Japanese: 御杖[村] - みつえ

A village in Uda County, on the eastern edge of Nara Prefecture. Population 2,840 (1995). At the eastern end of the Uda Mountains, the village is surrounded by mountains over 1,000 meters above sea level, with Mt. Kogo (953m) of the Muro volcanic group to the north and the Takami mountain range to the south. It borders Mie Prefecture on three sides except the west, and is the source of the main and tributaries of the Nabari River, with settlements scattered along the valleys of the north-flowing Kozue River and Soni River. It has long been on the route to Ise Shrine, and flourished as a post town in the early modern period. Most of the village area is forest, and the production of raw cedar and cypress timber and polished logs is thriving.

奈良県の東端，宇陀郡の村。人口2840(1995)。宇陀山地東端にあたり，北に室生火山群の古光（こごう）山(953m)，南に高見山地があり，周囲を標高1000m級の山に囲まれる。西を除く三方は三重県に接し，名張川本･支流の源流地帯で，北流する神末（こうずえ）川，曾爾（そに）川などの谷沿いに集落が点在する。古くから伊勢参宮の道筋にあたり，近世には宿場として栄えた。村域の大部分が山林で，杉，ヒノキの原材やみがき丸太の生産が盛ん。
