Hiraizumi [town] - Hiraizumi

Japanese: 平泉[町] - ひらいずみ
Hiraizumi [town] - Hiraizumi
A town in Nishiiwai County in southern Iwate Prefecture. The Kitakami River runs through the center of the town, and the Tohoku Main Line and Tohoku Expressway pass through it. The hilly area between the Kinugawa and Iwaigawa rivers was an important location for Emishi management from ancient times. The distinctive Hiraizumi culture flourished here from the construction of Fujiwara Kiyohira's castle in 1094 until the downfall of the Fujiwara clan in 1189. There are many historical sites, including Chusonji Temple, Motsuji Temple, and Kinugawa Mansion, said to be the final resting place of Minamoto no Yoshitsune. Rice fields have been developed along the Kitakami River, and apple cultivation is thriving. Dairy farming is also practiced. The town suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. In 2011, the temples, gardens, and ruins scattered throughout the town were registered as a World Heritage Site as "Architecture, Gardens, and Archaeological Sites Representing the Buddhist Land (Pure Land)". Area: 63.39 km2 . 8,345 people (2010).
