A city in central Ibaraki Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1889. In 1992, Tsunezumi Village was incorporated. It is the prefectural capital. Since the 1960s, the city center has been developed, and distribution and wholesale centers have been established against the backdrop of active commercial activity, making it the administrative and economic center of the prefecture. The Mito Prefectural History Museum, the Mito Prefectural Museum of Modern Art, and the Mito Art Museum have also opened, and it is developing as a cultural city. In addition to tobacco manufacturing, other famous products include Mito fans and Mito natto. The Joban Line passes through the city, and the Suigun Line and Kashima Rinkai Railway branch off from it. The Joban Expressway passes through the city.
