…In the Ottoman Empire, the royal court was called the Sarai, a Persian loanword, and was divided into the outer court, where the monarch's official duties took place, the inner court, where the monarch's private life took place, and the harem, where the women of the court lived. The inner court was staffed by a large number of pages (Ici-ouran), most of whom, at least until the end of the 16th century, were prisoners of war and young boys recruited by the Deusirme from the children of Christian subjects in the empire, and were ghulams of slave status. The inner court was the place where the monarch lived, but it also served as an educational and training institution for the pages, the majority of whom were ghulams.
