In 1917, the Mitsubishi Joint Shipbuilding Division, based at the Nagasaki Shipyard, became independent as Mitsubishi Shipbuilding. In 1921, Mitsubishi Electric was separated, and in 1934, the name was changed to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. Until World War II, it was the largest military contractor. In 1950, the company was divided into three companies due to the Centralized Decentralization Act, and in 1964 it was reunited and reverted to its former name. It grew into Japan's largest heavy industry company, focusing on power plants, aircraft, and tanks rather than shipbuilding, and is a core company of the Mitsubishi Group (see Mitsubishi Zaibatsu). It has made efforts to develop new nuclear reactors. The automobile division was separated into Mitsubishi Motors in 1970.
