Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd.
A leading heavy machinery manufacturer in Japan. A leader in a wide range of fields including shipbuilding, aviation, space, nuclear power, engines, defense, and the environment. In 1917, the Mitsubishi Joint Shipbuilding Division, based at the Nagasaki Shipyard, became independent as Mitsubishi Shipbuilding. In 1921, Mitsubishi Electric was separated, and in 1934, the name was changed to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. Until World War II, it was the largest military contractor. In 1950, the company was divided into three companies due to the Centralized Decentralization Act, and in 1964 it was reunited and reverted to its former name. It grew into Japan's largest heavy industry company, focusing on power plants, aircraft, and tanks rather than shipbuilding, and is a core company of the Mitsubishi Group (see Mitsubishi Zaibatsu). It has made efforts to develop new nuclear reactors. The automobile division was separated into Mitsubishi Motors in 1970. Headquarters in Tokyo, shipyards and factories in Nagasaki, Kobe, Shimonoseki, etc. Capital in 2011 was 265.6 billion yen, and sales for the fiscal year ending March 2011 were 2,903.7 billion yen. Sales composition (%) is Ships & Marine 10, Prime Mover 34, Machinery & Steel Structure 19, Aerospace 16, General-Purpose & Special Vehicle 12, Others 9. Overseas sales ratio is 49%.

日本を代表する総合重機会社。造船,航空,宇宙,原子力,原動機,防衛,環境など幅広い分野でリーダー的存在。1917年長崎造船所を基礎とする三菱合資造船部が三菱造船として独立。1921年三菱電機を分離,1934年三菱重工業と改称。第2次大戦中まで最大の軍需企業であった。1950年,集中排除法により3社に分割,1964年合併して旧に復した。造船部門よりも発電プラント,航空機,戦車などで日本最大の総合重工業会社に成長し,三菱グループ(三菱財閥参照)の中核企業。新型原子炉などの開発に努力。なお自動車部門は1970年三菱自動車工業として分離。本社東京,造船所・製作所長崎,神戸,下関ほか。2011年資本金2656億円,2011年3月期売上高2兆9037億円。売上構成(%)は,船舶・海洋10,原動機34,機械・鉄構19,航空・宇宙16,汎用機・特殊車両12,その他9。海外売上比率49%。
