Fanning phenomenon

...This is a pathological sole cutaneous reflex seen in patients with disorders due to bleeding, inflammation, tumors, etc. in the pyramidal tract system of the brain or spinal cord. When the outer part of the sole is rubbed strongly with a needle or similar object, the toes, especially the thumb, slowly bend dorsally (finger phenomenon). At this time, the toes other than the thumb may be abducted as if opening a fan (fan-opening phenomenon). This reflex can occur even in patients who cannot voluntarily dorsiflex their toes due to disorders of the pyramidal tract system.
