Thoth

An ancient Egyptian god. He was a god with many different characteristics. First, as a moon god, he ruled the sky while the sun was down by the command of Re. Also, as a measurer of time, he made the first month of the Egyptian calendar the month of Thoth, and divided the year into three seasons. He is also considered the god of the creation of the universe, and four gods and goddesses were born from his voice. He also accompanied Osiris on his expedition to Asia as his chief minister, and is said to have been instrumental in the resurrection of the murdered Osiris and to have protected his son Horus. He was blessed with wisdom, and invented all kinds of learning, as well as hieroglyphics. It was Thoth's role to record the judgments shown by the scales of justice in Osiris' "Hall of Judgment," and he is also considered the scribe god who kept the records. He also played the role of passing judgment himself. In various documents, his wife is said to be the god of justice, Maat, but in temples, Sephekt and Nemaut were worshiped along with him. His festival was apparently held on the 19th day of the month of Thoth.

古代エジプトの神。種々の性格をもつ神で，まず月神としてレーの命令により太陽が沈んでいる間天空を支配し，また時の計量者としてエジプト暦 1月をトートの月とし，1年を3つの季節に分けた。宇宙創造の神ともされ，彼の声から4人ずつの男神女神が生れたという。またオシリスの宰相として彼のアジア遠征に随行し，殺されたオシリスの復活にも尽し，その子ホルスを守ったという。知恵に恵まれ，あらゆる学問を発明し，また象形文字も発明した。オシリスの「裁きの間」で正義の秤の示す審判を記すのはトートの役目で，記録を保管する書記の神ともされる。また彼みずから判決を下す役割をになった。諸文書では妻は正義の神マートとされるが，神殿ではセフェクトとネマウトが彼とともに祀られた。トートの月の 19日に彼の祭りが行われたらしい。
