A perennial plant of the Commelinaceae family (APG classification: Commelinaceae), found in Mexico and Texas. Also called purple goat. The stems grow by creeping along the ground. The cultivar Pallida, Purple Heart (formerly Pool Purpurea), is cultivated in Japan, and has thick stems with slightly fleshy oblong leaves, beautiful violet leaves with a whitish powdery hue. It produces pink flowers in early autumn. It should be planted in a 4-5 inch pot, but a hanging pot will do. It needs 3°C to overwinter, and in warm areas it can overwinter outdoors. Plant in well-drained soil and keep in a place that is always exposed to strong sunlight. It is propagated by stem cuttings, which are inserted between May and August.
