Iwakuni Chijimi - Iwakuni Chijimi

A type of cotton chijimi produced in the Iwakuni region of Yamaguchi Prefecture. It began in the Kan'en era (1748-51) when Toyama Hideyoshi applied the manufacturing method of Tango crepe to cotton to create cotton chijimi. It became known as Iwakuni chijimi during the Tenpo era (1831-44), and continued to thrive as a local industry after the Meiji era. Before World War II, the most famous cotton chijimi was made by Gisei-do, which used 32-count warp threads and 20-count weft threads with strong right-left twist.

山口県岩国地方で生産されていた綿縮(めんちぢみ)の一種。寛延(かんえん)年間（1748～51）に富山秀意が丹後縮緬(たんごちりめん)の製法に倣い、木綿に応用して綿縮をつくりだしたことに始まる。天保(てんぽう)年間（1831～44）から岩国縮の名称で知られるようになり、明治以後も地場産業の一つとして盛んであった。第二次世界大戦前の綿縮は、義済堂(ぎせいどう)のものが著名であり、経糸(たていと)に32番手、緯糸(よこいと)に20番手の左右強撚糸(きょうねんし)を使用していた。
