Also called a mystery. A mystical ritual that allows only those with special qualifications to participate, or that is performed to grant new special qualifications. The Greek etymology means "mystery." Originally, it was a concrete form (system) that expressed religious mysteries in order to solidify faith, but it also has important social functions such as maintaining secrecy externally, raising the sense of chosenness among members, and maintaining order and solidarity internally. Examples include the Christian sacraments, the incantations and ablutions in Shingon Buddhism, other secret societies with a strong religious character, coming-of-age ceremonies in societies that lead very traditional lives, and private ceremonies in sorcery.
