Corpus allata

A tiny endocrine organ found in the posterior part of the brain of insects (excluding wingless insects) throughout their lives. Its original name, corpora allata (plural), means "transported corpus". This name comes from the fact that a pair of cell masses invaginate from the ectoderm near the jaw during the embryonic stage, migrate to the posterior part of the brain, and connect to the brain via a glandular ganglion called the corpus cardiaca. The shape, the way it is located in the posterior part of the brain, and the number and shape of its constituent cells vary depending on the insect. The small, spherical corpora allata are generally distributed to the left and right of the artery that runs along the back of the esophagus. With the involvement of the brain, it secretes hormones from the corpus allata, which regulate various functions such as insect growth, egg maturation, and body color regulation.

昆虫（無翅(むし)類を除く）の脳後部に終生みられる微小な内分泌器官。原名corpora allata（複数）は「運ばれてきた小体」の意。これは、胚(はい)期にあご付近の外胚葉から陥入した1対の細胞塊が脳後部へ移動し、側心体とよばれる腺(せん)性小神経節を介して脳につながることに由来する。昆虫により、その形状、脳後部でのあり方、あるいはその構成細胞の数、形態などはさまざまに異なっている。一般には小球状のアラタ体が食道背面を走る動脈の左右に振り分けられている。脳の関与のもとにアラタ体ホルモンを分泌し、昆虫の成長、卵成熟、体色調節などいろいろな機能の調節に働く。
