Japanese: グソクダイ(具足鯛) - グソクダイ（英語表記）deepwater squirrelfish

A marine fish of the family Scyphoidae in the order Alfonsini (illustration). It is found west of Sagami Bay, as far as Taiwan, and on the Japan Sea coast as far as Miyazu, where it lives on relatively deep coastal reefs. Its body is a beautiful red color and tall. Its scales are large and hard. In Kagoshima, it is called Yoroidai, which, along with its name Gusokudai, is likely a reference to its spiny gill covers and the tough-looking scales, as well as its body color, which resembles armor. It is also known by other local names, such as Kintoki in Tokyo and Osaka, Akame in Kagoshima, and Ebisudai in Misaki and Toba.

キンメダイ目イットウダイ科の海産魚（イラスト）。相模湾以西，台湾まで，また日本海側では宮津辺まで分布し，沿岸のやや深い岩礁にすむ。体は赤色で美しく，体高が高い。うろこは大きくて硬い。鹿児島ではヨロイダイというが，グソクダイの名とともに，とげのあるえらぶたやうろこのいかつい感じと赤糸おどしの鎧を思わせる体色からつけられたものであろう。また，東京，大阪でキントキ，鹿児島でアカメ，三崎，鳥羽でエビスダイなどの地方名もある。
